A Political History of Anglo-American Relations since 1945

Circumstances, and common enemies, have kept Britain and the United
States in close partnership for much of the twentieth century, but
the relationship - however 'special' at times - has not been
automatic, instinctive or steady: indeed it has often been dominated
by economic disputes. The ending of familiar Cold War certainties
makes this an appropriate time for stock-taking; and in this
admirably clear-eyed and judicious study, Professor Bartlett reviews
the history of the relationship since the Second World War, and
assesses just how special it has been. Through the eyes of
contemporary American and British policy-makers, he reconstructs
changing official perceptions of the relationship and explains what
respective governments hoped to get out of it.
