Two North African citizens who were arrested in a police operation in Catalunya on 24 January 2003 (see Statewatch vol 13 no 2), were released on 19 May 2003 after paying 600 euros bail. They and 14 others were suspected of links to al-Qaida and of planning terrorist attacks. They were detained in the so-called Operación Lago, which included raids in a number of Catalan towns, involving 150 officers from the formation, GEO (Grupo Especial de Operaciones) and Tedax (explosive disposal) divisions. The other 14 suspects were released on 21 March after substances that were confiscated as possible chemical materials liable to be used in a terrorist attack turned out to be harmless.
