Coroner Sir Montague Levine was critical of immigration procedures after an inquest jury brought in a verdict of accidental death on 31-year-old Nigerian Joseph Nnalue, who fell to his death as he tried to escape police and immigration officers during a raid in October 1994. As he lay dying on the floor outside the flat, his eight-months pregnant widow, Grace Abrahams, was questioned about her own immigration status. Sir Montague said immigration officers should have had more information on the couple when they went round on an anonymous tip-off. Times 5.4.95.
