Face recognition closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras were unveiled, in the London borough of Newham, for the first time in October. The 144 cameras will scan the faces of passers-by and attempt to match them with convicted criminals on the Metropolitan police database. The 6-month pilot scheme costs ?60,000 and uses cameras located in shopping centres, underground stations and near schools; 90 more cameras will be established on housing estates. The scheme has been roundly condemned by civil liberties groups and Liz Parratt, of Liberty, dismissed claims that innocent people have nothing to worry about as "rubbish" adding: "...our view is that the use of this technology strikes the wrong balance."
