UK: HMP Wandsworth "deteriorating"

Conditions at HMP Wandsworth have deteriorated, according to the Chief Inspector of Prisons, Anne Owers. Wandsworth has been rated poorly on all four of the Prison Inspectorates' "healthy prisons" tests. Assessing safety, respect, purposeful activity, and resettlement, the inspectorate raised serious concerns. Black and ethnic minority prisoners consistently complained of racism, staff were disrespectful and failed to engage with prisoners and overcrowding made conditions worse. During the previous inspection 16 months ago, the prison was found to be "failing to meet basic standards of decency and activity for most of its 1,460 prisoners." Since then, things had "become significantly worse."
