01 January 2003
HMP Shotts, in Lanarkshire, has been hit by a wave of inmate protests over conditions at the maximum security jail. Three prison officers were injured in an incident on 8 January at the jail's secure unit. Earlier in the week, over 80 inmates had taken part in a 19 hour protest at the jail, which has a history of protest over deteriorating conditions and alleged brutality by prison staff.
