Home Office minister Alan Michael has announced that the Police Information and Technology Organisation (PITO) will take on statutory functions from 1998. PITO was established last year on an interim basis and is "responsible for working with police and the IT and communications industry". It supplies police with information from the Police National Computer and also oversees the Police National Network. A board with representatives from the police service, police authorities, the Home Office and the Scottish Office will be appointed in the autumn.
