Provides an account and critique of previous criminological and
sociological writings, and of current debates on feminist
criminology. Contains accounts of women criminals' own histories
and recounts what happens to them in court, in prison, and at the
hands of the police. Argues that punishments meted out to women
are often harsher than those for men and highlights the crucial
role of the media and popular culture, and stereotyping of
deviant women. Also examines the ways in which social control is
exercised over women in the family, society and at work.
