Work with us

We are a small team dedicated to defending civil liberties and human rights across Europe. By working with us, you’ll contribute to meaningful research, advocacy, and education that influence policy and protect our rights and freedoms.

Research services

We are available to undertake research for other organisations and individuals – for example journalists, lawyers, civil society organisations and activist groups. We have extensive experience of EU and national-level (primarily UK) access to documents/freedom of information requests and are able to gather and analyse data, documents or undertake other work as required.

Previous work includes research and writing for Taz newspaper, the Transnational Institute (TNI), the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM) and the Ethical Journalism Network.

We are also able to offer specific assistance with official EU documentation. We have hundreds of documents publicly available through our website, including via SEMDOC and our JHA Archive contain thousands of EU documents from 1971 onwards.

We also have an extensive collection of EU documents acquired from the early 1990s onwards that we have not yet been able to digitise. If you are looking for material on a particular topic or theme, please contact us to see how we can help you.

Contribute

Statewatch has been supported by volunteer contributors since the very beginning. Whether you wish to submit work or volunteer your time, we’d love to hear from you.

The Statewatch contributors group is a network of people who support our work in a variety of ways. They may contribute articles, provide information, or support our research projects

Anyone who is interested in supporting our work can request to join the Statewatch contributors group by submitting their interest.

We accept the following types of contributions:

News articles ( 200-1,500 words)

News articles can be based on:

  • first-hand reporting;
  • reports published by NGOs, government bodies or other organisations;
  • write-ups of campaigns, protests or other actions;
  • write-ups of statements or announcements (e.g. by a campaign group);
  • write-ups of academic work;
  • official documentation;
  • official speeches; or
  • book reviews.

News articles should report facts and other peoples’ opinions, but not the author’s own opinions.

Analyses (1,000 – 10,000 words)

Analyses should take an in-depth look at an issue or situation. An analysis should provide the author’s opinion on the topic in question, as long as that opinion is backed up by evidence.

Please bear in mind that the longer your contribution, the longer it will take us to consider it for publication.

Translations

We welcome translations of our work into languages other than English for us to publish. If you wish to publish our work in another language on an external site, please reach out to comms@statewatch.org.

We also welcome translations of external work into English, as long as permission has been granted by the original author/publisher (where necessary).

We frequently publish official documentation, both from the EU institutions and national governments. These include documents obtained directly, through freedom of information, or leaked from trusted sources.

If you are submitting something for us to publish, we would greatly appreciate a short summary of its content.

If you have material you would like to send to us securely, please write to secure@statewatch.org using our PGP key.

We occasionally accept students doing a work placement, or host academics, journalists or creatives through funded fellowship programmes.

If you are interested in these options, please contact us.

Otherwise, we do not offer internships directly. If you would like to volunteer your time, please submit your interest to join our contributors group.

We host an extensive physical archive in our London office and are always looking for volunteers. This could include:

  • Digitising content
  • Writing articles about select materials
  • Doing a creative project using archive material

If you are interested in volunteering with the archive, please get in contact.
